Доклад очерчивает взгляды правительств и их политику в области населения и развития. Анализ выполнен для 197 стран, включая все 193 государства-члена ООН, два государства Наблюдателя (Ватикан и Палестина) и два государства, не явдяющихся членами ООН (Ниуэ и Острова Кука). В докладе, в частности, рассматривается политика в отношении численности населения и его роста, возрастной структуры, рождаемости, репродуктивного здоровья и планирования семьи, здоровья и смертности, пространственного распределения, а также внутренней миграции и международной миграции. Подобные отчеты о мировой демографической политике публикуются каждые два года начиная с 2003 г. До этого, в 2001 и 1998 гг. доклад публиковался под названием National Population Policies. Еще раньше, до 1998 г., данные о демографической политике в мире публиковались в ряде мониторинговых отчетов и пересматривавшейся каждые два года базе данных Global Review and Inventory of Population Policies (GRIPP).
