Tuesday Dialogue
with Dr. Sebastian Klusener
Tuesday Dialogue with Dr. Sebastian Klusener
Topic: The extension of working life into older age:
trends, social differences and East-West differences
8 February, 13:00 to 14:00 CET (with translation services)
The ageing of the baby boomers poses major challenges
to Germany's labour supply and social security systems. Increasing
labour force participation at older ages is seen as an important
means of meeting these challenges. But how has labour force participation
at older ages developed over the past decades according to gender,
education and occupational qualification? What contributes to differences?
What current trends are discernible?

PDR Special Issue:
Pandemic Babies?
The Covid-19 Pandemic and Its Impact on Fertility and Family Dynamics
Guest Editors: Natalie Nitsche, Mikko Myrskyla, and
Joshua Wilde
In December 2021, a conference hosted by the Max Planck
Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) brought together more
than 100 international researchers to present and discuss recent
research on the impact and consequences of the pandemic for family
and fertility dynamics. A Population and Development Review Supplement
co-sponsored by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research
and the Population Council will be based mainly on this conference.
However, we are also accepting additional submissions
to the special issue. The main focus of the special issue will be
on the fertility impact of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, we
would like to include studies which investigate fertility decisions,
fertility intentions, and family dynamics, such as family formation
and dissolution, household division of labor, contraceptive use,
and mental health, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Submission Deadline: March 17th, 2022.

Human Mortality Database Symposium
Old and new challenges to longevity prospects
The Human Mortality Database Project team invites contributions
to the 6th HMD Symposium.
16-17 June 2022, Paris, France
The year 2022 will mark the 20th anniversary of the
launch of the Human Mortality Database (HMD). In 2002, the HMD Founding
Director, John Wilmoth, presented the HMD for the first time at
the annual meeting of the Population Association of America. Over
the years, the HMD has become an essential resource for those interested
in research on longevity. We are inviting everyone to join the HMD
team at the 6th HMD symposium to celebrate this anniversary!
The purpose of the Symposium is to present and promote
cutting-edge research on mortality and survival, with a special
focus on newly emerging challenges like COVID-19, and global and
national longevity prospects in the times of uncertainty. Analyses
based on data from the HMD and other related projects (including
the Human Lifetable Database, the Human Cause of Death Database,
the Short Term Mortality Fluctuations database, and the United States
Mortality Database) are particularly encouraged but not necessary.
The meeting will take place over two days at INED, in
Paris, France, on June 16-17, 2022 and will feature a mix of invited
presentations and spontaneously submitted papers. The meeting is
currently planned to be held in-person, but provisions are being
made for a hybrid format (mixed in-person and remote), should the
epidemiologic situation require it. There are no participation fees,
but speakers and other participants are expected to cover their
own travel and accommodation expenses.
The symposium themes include, but are not limited to,
the following research areas:
- Data revolution(s): opportunities and new challenges
- Measuring Covid-19 impact
- Causes of death during health crises
- Global longevity estimates
- Drivers of longevity change
- Frontiers of human longevity: health and survival at advanced
ages
- Changes in mortality inequalities
If you are interested in contributing to the 6th HMD
Symposium, please send a 300+ word abstract or draft paper to Magali
Barbieri (magali@berkeley.edu) and Dmitri Jdanov (jdanov@demogr.mpg.de)
with a copy to Ornella Makiese (ornella.makiese@ined.fr), the meeting
secretary, by April 1, 2022.
Please make sure to include: the provisional title of
your proposal, the full name(s) of each author, their affiliations
(full names of organizations and departments), and their e-mail
addresses. Applicants will be notified by April 15, 2022 if their
paper has been accepted.

PERN Cyberseminar
on the Demography of Sustainable Human Wellbeing
The
Population-Environment Research Network (PERN), scientific panel
of the IUSSP, will organize a cyberseminar on "The Demography
of Sustainable Human Wellbeing" from 14 to 21 March 2022.
A webinar to kick off the cyberseminar will take place
on 14 March from 15:00 to 16:30 UTC (10-11:30 EST / 16-17:30 CET).
This cyberseminar focuses on the Demography of Sustainable
Human Wellbeing with the Wittgenstein Centre, which is an alliance
of IIASA, Austrian Academy of Sciences and University of Vienna).
The purpose will be to vet a newly proposed indicator of human wellbeing
"Years of Good Life" (counting only years of life above
minimum levels of physical and mental health, income, and subjective
life satisfaction) which can be calculated for all sub-populations
of interest and has been tailor made to serve as criterion variable
for assessing sustainable progress in human wellbeing over time
in sustainability science. The webinar will also include expert
contributions from producers of other wellbeing indices, including
the World Happiness Index, the SDG Index, and the Planetary pressures-adjusted
Human Development Index.
Organizers: Wolfgang Lutz and Raya Muttarak of the Wittgenstein
Centre, Alex de Sherbinin, and Susana Adamo of PERN and CIESIN at
Columbia University.

Consequences,
challenges, and adaptation to abortion care throughout
and beyond COVID-19
At the time of this writing, global COVID19 cases are
soaring again, and many locations are considering renewed measures
to protect public health. To date, this pandemic has claimed over
four million lives and over 200 million people have suffered and
continue to suffer with complications of this disease. Yet, we are
only beginning to learn the toll the pandemic has taken on essential
health care utilization. Re-prioritization of health service resources
and self- and system-imposed delays in care-seeking have likely
caused countless morbidity and mortality.
Even less is known about the gendered consequences of
reduced care-seeking, and particularly the impact on fertility and
abortion decision-making. This research topic will focus on the
implications of COVID19 on abortion service utilization and care-seeking,
some of which were caused by directives to self-quarantine and maintain
social distancing, and for a plethora of other reasons. Research
on the challenges faced and the solutions from programs, innovations,
and adaptations put forward to access this essential care during
a global pandemic is essential. Research and documentation of the
changes in utilization, costs, service and supply chain interruptions,
and linkages to other health and social services are key to institutionalizing
the lessons we have learned and preparing us for future crises.
This Research Topic will focus on innovations and adaptations
to abortion care programs and research necessitated by the global
pandemic. We recognize that this work has evolved quickly and as
such, we welcome a broad range of contributions, including Original
Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Study Protocols, and Systematic
Reviews.
Submission Deadlines: 14 January 2022 - abstract, 22 March 2022
- manuscript.

SETTLE International
Congress:
“Population imbalances in Europe”
This Congress is part of an ERASMUS+ entitled: “Population
imbalances in Europe: challenges of urban concentration versus rural
depopulation” (SETTLE). It will be held on-site on 27th, 28th and
29th April 2022 in the University of Alcala (Spain); organized by
the Jean Monnet Chair “Economic Policy and European Union” and the
Institute for Economic and Social Analysis (IAES). The SETTLE Congress
is open to researchers, academics, students, public authorities
and professionals.
Attendance is allowed with or without the presentation
of a paper or a poster. Registration is free up to 125 participants,
and includes the right for attending, presenting papers and receiving
the congress papers, as well as the meals during the Congress. Among
them, travel and hotel expenses will be funded up to 40 participants
on restrictive and justified terms, imposed by the project regulation
(the project counts on the financial support of the European Commission).
Thus, the economic need, the interest of the paper and the order
of reception will be considered. In this sense, posters will be
less valued for allowing travel and expenses funding but will be
equal considered for the right of attending and meals.

with a small number of in-person sessions in India, while most sessions
will be virtual.
The virtual conference will offer around-the-clock sessions
to enable participants from around the world to present new research
and meet with colleagues. All sessions will be available on-demand
as video recordings. Opportunities to meet, discuss and interact
virtually with colleagues will be provided. To enable the organizers
to schedule sessions, all those submitting papers will be asked
to indicate the country and time zone from where they will make
their presentation.
There will also be an in-person component to the conference
that will take place in Hyderabad India 5-6 December 2021. This
will include the inaugural session on 5 December, and eight India
day sessions on 6 December. Participants working on population issues
in India interested in presenting their work at India Day sessions
either in-person or virtually should submit an abstract to the India
Day theme in the Call for Papers. Submissions to these sessions
may include any of the themes outlined in the call.

Debate:
"The wife wants no more births, but the husband does.
Can one say that her subsequent pregnancy is unwanted?"
The IUSSP Scientific Panel on Couples'
Reproductive Health and Fertility is organizing a debate on the
following topic: "If the wife says that she wants no more births,
but the husband does want another birth, can one necessarily say
that her subsequent pregnancy is unwanted? Yes or No?"
Four debaters will take turns debating
alternately in favor of one of the two positions: Suzana Cavenaghi
and Sunday Adedini will argue "yes", while Francis Dodoo
and K.G. Santhya will argue "no". The webinar will be
introduced by Stan Becker, the chair of the IUSSP Panel on Couples'
Reproductive Health and Fertility, and moderated by Ambrose Akinlo.
Neetu John will provide a synthesis and closing remarks.
The webinar will include Q&A with
the audience, who will be invited to cast their vote in favor of
one of the arguments at the end of the debate.
