Advances in Mortality Forecasting

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) will be offering a five-day intensive online course and encourages qualified candidates to apply.

This course provides an advanced introduction to an ample range of modern statistical techniques to forecast mortality. Stochastic methods to predict the future course of mortality have flourished in the last three decades, improving on previous deterministic and expert-based approaches. In this course, you will learn to master well-established models as well as some recent innovations in mortality forecasting from both theoretical and applied perspectives.

Accurate forecasts of mortality are essential for various reasons. In addition to being an important input for population projections, mortality forecasts can inform researchers, governments and policymakers about our future longevity, the extent of population ageing and the sustainability of pension schemes and social security systems. Several approaches to forecast mortality have been recently proposed, each with their own advantages and limitations. Instead of discussing a broad list of models, the course will provide an exhaustive explanation of the theoretical framework and assumptions underpinning selected approaches. This will be of paramount importance to employ and compare forecasting models on solid bases as well as to handle alternative options.

The course will start by introducing the statistical foundations for all models covered in the course. These include, among others, Generalized Linear and Nonlinear Models, Singular Value Decomposition, Newton-Raphson method, ARIMA time-series models and bootstrap techniques. Next, three main methodologies will be presented in great detail: the Lee-Carter model and several of its extensions, the smoothing P-splines model and its constrained extension, and the Segmented Transformation Age-at-death Distributions model. Approaches to coherently forecast mortality for a group of populations will be introduced and discussed in the last day. Finally, an overview of the latest developments in the field on mortality forecasting will be presented in an optional one-hour live session.

Handouts and routines to reproduce all outcomes presented in the course will be provided to students, who will be expected to solve related exercises and present their results to the class. The statistical software R will be used throughout the course on publicly available demographic datasets. By the end of the course, students will have acquired both theoretical and practical skills in mortality forecasting.

When: 17 - 21 January 2022

Instructors: Carlo Giovanni Camarda and Ugofilippo Basellini

The application deadline is 18 December 2021.

IPC2021 Countdown Event:
Introduction to Multistate Analysis of Population Dynamics

Multistate analysis is valuable for understanding and modelling life trajectories related to multiple social phenomena. It offers a way of formalizing complex demographic transitions (marriage, fertility, health/mortality, migration, occupation, etc.) into a single framework representing the life-courses of individuals and populations. This online workshop provides a gentle introduction to multistate models and their applications in demographic research. It introduces the use of dynamic microsimulation to create life histories for individuals within synthetic cohorts.

Instructor: Dr. James O’Donnell, Lecturer at the School of Demography, Australian National University.

When: 3 December 2021 - 5:00-6:30 UTC

Consequences, challenges, and adaptation to abortion care throughout
and beyond COVID-19

At the time of this writing, global COVID19 cases are soaring again, and many locations are considering renewed measures to protect public health. To date, this pandemic has claimed over four million lives and over 200 million people have suffered and continue to suffer with complications of this disease. Yet, we are only beginning to learn the toll the pandemic has taken on essential health care utilization. Re-prioritization of health service resources and self- and system-imposed delays in care-seeking have likely caused countless morbidity and mortality.

Even less is known about the gendered consequences of reduced care-seeking, and particularly the impact on fertility and abortion decision-making. This research topic will focus on the implications of COVID19 on abortion service utilization and care-seeking, some of which were caused by directives to self-quarantine and maintain social distancing, and for a plethora of other reasons. Research on the challenges faced and the solutions from programs, innovations, and adaptations put forward to access this essential care during a global pandemic is essential. Research and documentation of the changes in utilization, costs, service and supply chain interruptions, and linkages to other health and social services are key to institutionalizing the lessons we have learned and preparing us for future crises.

This Research Topic will focus on innovations and adaptations to abortion care programs and research necessitated by the global pandemic. We recognize that this work has evolved quickly and as such, we welcome a broad range of contributions, including Original Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Study Protocols, and Systematic Reviews.

Submission Deadlines: 14 January 2022 - abstract, 22 March 2022 - manuscript.

European Association for Population Studies (EAPS)

The European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) invites submissions to the European Population Conference 2022 which will be held from 29 June- 2 July 2022.

EPC 2022 is organized by EAPS in collaboration with the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI-KNAW) and the University of Groningen. EPC 2022 will be a hybrid conference where all sessions can be joined onsite or online. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we expect to have a limited number of participants onsite in Groningen. You can indicate whether you are interested to attend the conference onsite when you submit your abstract. More detailed information on the hybrid model and conference website will follow in due course.

At EPC 2022 participants will have to cover their own costs of participation. The organizers regret that no financial support will be available.

You can find the call for papers here.

SETTLE International Congress:
“Population imbalances in Europe”

This Congress is part of an ERASMUS+ entitled: “Population imbalances in Europe: challenges of urban concentration versus rural depopulation” (SETTLE). It will be held on-site on 27th, 28th and 29th April 2022 in the University of Alcala (Spain); organized by the Jean Monnet Chair “Economic Policy and European Union” and the Institute for Economic and Social Analysis (IAES). The SETTLE Congress is open to researchers, academics, students, public authorities and professionals.

Attendance is allowed with or without the presentation of a paper or a poster. Registration is free up to 125 participants, and includes the right for attending, presenting papers and receiving the congress papers, as well as the meals during the Congress. Among them, travel and hotel expenses will be funded up to 40 participants on restrictive and justified terms, imposed by the project regulation (the project counts on the financial support of the European Commission). Thus, the economic need, the interest of the paper and the order of reception will be considered. In this sense, posters will be less valued for allowing travel and expenses funding but will be equal considered for the right of attending and meals.

IUSSP Debate:
"The wife wants no more births, but the husband does.
Can one say that her subsequent pregnancy is unwanted?"

The IUSSP Scientific Panel on Couples' Reproductive Health and Fertility is organizing a debate on the following topic: "If the wife says that she wants no more births, but the husband does want another birth, can one necessarily say that her subsequent pregnancy is unwanted? Yes or No?"

Four debaters will take turns debating alternately in favor of one of the two positions: Suzana Cavenaghi and Sunday Adedini will argue "yes", while Francis Dodoo and K.G. Santhya will argue "no". The webinar will be introduced by Stan Becker, the chair of the IUSSP Panel on Couples' Reproductive Health and Fertility, and moderated by Ambrose Akinlo. Neetu John will provide a synthesis and closing remarks.

The webinar will include Q&A with the audience, who will be invited to cast their vote in favor of one of the arguments at the end of the debate.
