Demographic barometer: World trends in mortality at older ages

  • The proportion of people aged 60 and over increased to 58% of total deaths in 2010-2015, with marked differences from country to country – from 27% in the least developed ones to 83% in the most developed ones

  • The average cohort life expectancy  is higher than what was expected in the period in which they were born

  • Between the ages of 30 and 44 external causes, HIV infection and AIDS claim more lives than cardiovascular disease and cancer, which become the main causes of death after age 45
