Road traffic accidents and mortality from external causes in the EC-27 and the CIS

  • In  1990-2010, the proportion of deaths from external causes  in the EC-27 decreased from 5,3% to 4,8%, including  deaths resulting from car accidents – from 1,2% to 0,8%.
  • The standardized deaths rate from external causes decreased from 46 per 100 thousand in 2000 to 36 in 2010, from car accidents – from 11,9 to 6,5.
  • In the EC-27 countries,  road traffic accident  fatalities  constitute  from 29 to 111 per million people , from 12 to 117 per 1000 road accidents, from 6 to 55 per 100 thousand light motor vehicles
  • The number of deaths due to the road traffic accidents in the CIS varies from 54 to 187 per million people; from 133 to 1000 per 1000 road traffic accidents

  • The first meeting of the Demographics Section of the Central House of Scientists RAS 2012-2013 season will be held on 25.10.2012 and will focus on demographic education in Russia.

  • An academic position full-time is opened at the Research Centre in Demography and Societies, Catholic University of Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), starting from September 1st, 2013 in the field of Family structures, households and intergenerational relations focused on Europe.   Deadline for applications: 17 December 2012.
